KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's outgoing ambassador to the United States, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, has hit back at critics targeting him over a photo of him holding a "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) poster.
"There are no diplomatic consequences. Americans welcome foreigners who support making America great," he said when reached by the New Straits Times.
Nazri, who is set to return to Malaysia permanently after his two-year tenure in Washington ends on Feb 8, dismissed concerns that his actions would have diplomatic repercussions.
He also questioned the reaction of Malaysians who criticised him.
"If, during Mahathir's time, an American held a placard saying 'Malaysia Boleh', would Malaysians be angry, or would they feel happy and proud? " he asked.
"I did not step on the American flag!" he added.
In January, Nazri's wife posted a photo of him holding the poster at the MAGA Victory Rally at Capital One Arena on the eve of US President's Donald Trump's inauguration, drawing public criticism. - NST
