PARLIAMENT | Khoo Poay Tiong (Harapan-Kota Melaka) today suggested that primary school history textbooks should include the history of all races in Malaysia.
Such a move would help with national unity from a young age, the DAP lawmaker told Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek in the Dewan Rakyat.
“For example, last year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the relationship between Malaysia and China.
“The relationship started when Admiral Cheng Ho came to Malacca.
“But when I checked the primary school history textbook, it did not touch on this,’ he said.
In the hands of committee
In response, Fadhlina explained that school syllabuses were determined by a special committee of experts and teachers.

The committee must decide which historical events are suitable for the education level of the students, she said.
“I take note of Kota Melaka’s concerns or views, but I would like to emphasise that all proposals regarding what historical events (are included in textbooks) are decided by this committee,” she added.
Cheng Ho, who was active in the late 1300s to early 1400s, was an influential eunuch in the Yongle Emperor’s court.
He visited several locations in Southeast Asia and travelled as far as India and Sri Lanka.
There is a gallery named after him in Malacca. It was opened in 2003 and displays information on his journeys to Southeast Asia. - Mkini
