Nazri pans outgoing CJ for suggesting political interference in judiciary

Former Umno leader Nazri Abdul Aziz has raised issues with outgoing Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's criticism over alleged political influence in the judiciary.

This followed Tengku Maimun's speech during a law conference in Malta last week, where she reportedly urged the removal of the prime minister's role in judicial appointments.

Nazri (above) questioned the timing of the top judge's remarks, saying that she was also appointed to the position under the same system that was based on British legal conventions.

"Tengku Maimun was appointed under the same system. She accepted it without issue. So why is she now saying it’s not okay just as she’s about to retire?" he said, as reported by news portal Free Malaysia Today.

For the record, Malaysia is using a system where its judges are appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under the advice of the prime minister.

On April 8, the news portal quoted Tengku Maimun's speech at the 24th Commonwealth Law Conference in Malta, where she called for the removal of the prime minister's role in appointing judges.

This, according to her, "would reinforce the impartiality of the selection process" and "remain free from any perception of political influence".

In response, Nazri, who is a former law minister, challenged the chief justice to show proof of such alleged political influence. - Mkini
