Bullying out of control in schools

YOURSAY | ‘Discipline students and staff who are supposed to be in charge.’

MRSM bullying case: Discipline committee recommends expulsion – Asyraf

FellowMalaysian: Many cases of such student bullying have recently sprouted out and these happened in public institutions of higher learning.

If the perpetrators are removed from Mara Science Junior College (MRSM) and let off with just a slap on the wrists like being removed from the college, this sleight of hands method will encourage other students to follow suit.

The parents of the victim should be firm in calling for justice to be meted out as this is a criminal offence.

Koel: Something is seriously wrong with the way families are raising these boys. It is time to call it as we see it.

This animal behaviour is indicative of poor nurturing and possibly extreme abuse in the families that these boys come from.

That is the only way they know how to relate to other human beings.

If you fail to raise youths using civilised norms and proper boundaries, they will not learn to be civilised. And we are seeing many cases of these extreme assaults among young boys.

YellowDragon4142: MRSM requires educators with experience in boarding schools and the authority to mete out restorative discipline and justice while adhering to a well-structured daily routine. It isn't difficult to do this.

What's difficult is whether those tasked with this duty are willing to carry it out to the best of their abilities conscientiously and sincerely.

Mat M Din: Indeed. The interview board when selecting students to enter MRSM should also take into account the students' family background, in addition to looking into their educational achievements.

Maybe these unruly students come from problematic families who show no interest in studies. If this is the case, these students are not fit to be offered places in MRSM.

They are not keen to study and to retain them in college is a sheer waste of money. They should be channelled to Technical and Vocational Education and Training where they could learn skills to enable them to land jobs.

The college management should also be held responsible for not being able to nip in the bud the unruly behaviour of the students. If strict discipline is imposed, unruly students who are prone to causing trouble could be prevented.

Solo: If only one student was involved, it would be a simple bullying case. Here, there were multiple students, and that points to an institutional problem.

Discipline both students and the staff who are supposed to be in charge. Otherwise, I see this incident repeating itself.

HJ Angus: Just expelling the boys is not good enough. This type of crime is so prevalent that criminals get away so easily.

A police report must be made if the authorities want to send the correct message to the kids and their families too.

Chefoo: All seven MRSM students should be expelled and sent to normal academic schools. Let it be a lesson.

Too many bullying cases in our schools and institutes of higher learning. Nip it in the bud or face the consequences.

Bullied for 6 years due to family's political stand, buck teeth

Kleeo: As a teacher, I feel so sorry for Siti Nur Haifaa’. What she endured was terrible, especially at that young age.

Those teachers should know better, but they showed callousness and a lack of compassion.

In my experience, teachers are no better than the public - most are mature and decent, while some are unable to keep their inner demons in check.

ScarletViper9930: What sort of education system would embolden this kind of treatment from teachers who ought to know better?

Is this what you call professional behaviour?

Teachers are paid a professional salary, and their conduct must be up to par. Fire those who have turned to be tormentors.

Undecided: The politics of division using 2Rs has an insidious effect on people, but when it comes to teachers, it is all the more worrisome.

Our politicians and clerics, especially those who pander to fear and division to win supporters, should reflect on their ungodly behaviour.

PurpleMoose5046: We send our children to school to learn and not to be bullied or killed.

If 41 army personnel can be dismissed for bullying why not the education minister to headmasters, teachers and school children?

KK Voter: If the writer intended to highlight the emotional damage of bullying, he picked the wrong method.

By using political leanings as an example in a portal mostly focused on political news, many readers chose to focus on the 2R aspect instead of the bullying aspect.

I sympathise with the victim and hope she heals. - Mkini
