PETALING JAYA
Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor has downplayed talk of Barisan Nasional (BN) tying up with Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the state elections, saying that the final decision will be up to the ruling coalition, comprising Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and PH.

Hajiji said GRS-PH Plus government has the right to determine its political allies going into the upcoming polls, Sinar Harian reported.

“Let’s not forget that the government today is led by GRS-PH Plus. So, we will decide who our political partners will be in the upcoming elections,” he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house in Sandakan today.

He was commenting on Sabah BN chairman Bung Moktar Radin’s announcement last Sunday that the coalition will be cooperating with PH in the state polls that must be held by the end of the year.

GRS is part of the federal coalition, which comprises PH, BN, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, as well as several minor parties and independents. However, in Sabah, BN is part of the opposition while Hajiji’s government has the support of five Umno members.

Hajiji, who is GRS chairman, also said that his coalition remains open to working with any party in the interest of political stability.

On Thursday, Hajiji indicated that GRS still favours working with PH in the upcoming state elections. He also said the recent announcement by Bung about cooperating with PH was merely the BN leader’s position.

Bung was reported to have said that the Sabah BN-PH collaboration was finalised last year. However, Sabah DAP chief Phoong Jin Zhe later denied having had any official talks on the matter with BN.

Both BN and GRS are courting PH for an alliance for the state polls. While PH has said it will decide on the matter closer to the polls, its elected representatives continue to be a part of Hajiji’s state Cabinet. - FMT
