Hindu Sangam calls for info on temple land to make 'strong proposal' to govt

Ahead of its “urgent” town hall meeting this Sunday, the Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) has called for detailed information on temple land matters to strengthen its proposal to the government.

In a Facebook post this afternoon, MHS emphasised that such information would help its legal team prepare for any significant developments, particularly amid growing concerns circulating on social media.

“As you are aware, there is rising concern over Hindu temple land matters, especially for temples located on land not owned by their respective managements.

“MHS acknowledges that each temple land issue is unique. However, to work towards a concrete and long-term solution for safeguarding our temples, we must present a strong proposal to the government,” the statement read.

The appeal was directed at temple chairpersons, representatives, and MHS state and local council members.

“Your cooperation is crucial in ensuring proactive steps are taken to address these challenges. Let us work together to protect and preserve our sacred temples,” MHS urged.

Masjid India temple relocation

The upcoming April 6 town hall, set to take place in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, follows the controversial relocation of the 130-year-old Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Jalan Masjid India to make way for a mosque construction.

The move has sparked polarised reactions, with discussions online focusing on the legal status of Hindu temples. A Facebook group has also been created to monitor and report on such cases.

In response to the issue, one commenter on the MHS Facebook page suggested conducting a nationwide registration drive to document all Hindu temples.

“Work closely with authorities to secure land titles and gazette temples. Develop a digital mapping system to track a temple’s legal status and historical significance.

“Historical documentation is crucial, as it would leave no room for others to question a temple’s significance. This registry must be transparent to all Hindus,” the comment read.

With increasing concerns over temple land security, MHS is urging community participation to ensure a long-term solution that safeguards Hindu places of worship. - Mkini
