KUALA LUMPUR: The Terengganu Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) rescued an elephant calf trapped in a snare near an oil palm plantation close to Felda Neram II, Kemaman, last Thursday.
Terengganu Perhilitan director Loo Kean Seong said six personnel were dispatched to the site after receiving information around 2.30pm.
"Upon arrival, they found the elephant calf's leg caught in a snare wire, believed to have been set by livestock breeders to trap cattle," he told Kosmo!.
He added that five adult elephants, including one believed to be the calf's mother, were also nearby.
Perhilitan officers cut the snare to free the calf, and an examination confirmed it had no serious injuries.
"The mother elephant had to be sedated, and the other four elephants driven away before the rescue could proceed," he said.
The elephant calf was then guided back into the forest with its mother, who was given an antidote to reverse the sedative. - NST
