PETALING JAYA:
SD Guthrie Bhd and Sime Darby Property Bhd have signed a joint venture to develop 2,000 acres on Carey Island, Selangor, into a major logistics and industrial hub.

A special purpose vehicle will be formed to lead the project, with Permodalan Nasional Bhd, parent company of the Sime group, set to appoint the chairman.

PNB president and group CEO Abdul Rahman Ahmad said the venture supports the government’s GEAR-uP initiative and national goals for sustainable industrial growth.

“This collaboration between PNB’s two strategic companies will provide a boost towards the sustainable development of this high-potential area, as well as help bolster further Malaysia’s economic and industrialisation growth,” he said in a statement today.

SD Guthrie group managing director Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha said Carey Island was identified by the government as a future port site due to its location near Pulau Indah and Port Klang.

“Carey Island offers the connectivity and scale needed for a world-class logistics and industrial hub, while allowing the plantation business to continue thriving,” he said.

Carey Island is home to the Klang Valley’s last fully integrated oil palm plantation, managed by SD Guthrie, which owns 79% of the island.

The estate includes two palm oil mills, a biodiesel plant, R&D facilities, a robotics centre, and a nursery – all certified to top global sustainability standards.

The companies said the industrial development will be carefully integrated with existing operations to protect sensitive mangrove ecosystems, heritage buildings, and the interests of the indigenous Mah Meri community.

Sime Darby Property group CEO Azmir Merican said the project offers a chance to design a future-ready industrial zone. “We look forward to master planning a sustainable port development that creates long-term value for businesses, communities and the economy,” he said.

The company has a track record of developing over 6,000 acres of industrial parks across nine townships, including in Elmina, Bukit Raja, Serenia City and Pagoh. - FMT
