Malay group calls for legislative changes to prevent abuse of bumiputera economic facilities.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM) has urged the government to make legislative changes so that it would be a crime to abuse economic facilities reserved for bumiputeras.
According to MTEM Executive Director Nizam Mahshar, these abuses, particularly those associated with the Ali Baba syndrome, had become too rampant to be ignored.
He scorned the frequent questioning of policies aimed at improving the economic status of bumiputeras, saying, “The reality is that the targets of those policies have never fully enjoyed the benefits of their special privileges.
“Immigrants freely remit profits to their countries of origin, and the Babas (meaning the Chinese partners in Ali Baba arrrangements) who were already rich become richer and more powerful.”
He laid much of the blame on the corruption of government officials and a phenomenon he called “tenderprenuerism” – the winnning of government contracts without going through the tender process.
He called not only for changes in laws and regulations governing the formation of companies but also the tightening of laws against corruption, money laundering, the leakage of sensitive information and the protection of witnesses.
He said such legislative changes were essential in combating monopolistic practises, cronyism, nepotism and “tenderprenuerism”.
