A photograph of Deputy Youth and Sports Minister M Saravanan with a gun tucked into his pants is making the rounds on Facebook.
The photograph was taken at the MIC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, where Saravanan held a press conference amid a tense atmosphere.
Initially, some 20 thugs, purportedly hired by the rival faction in the strife-torn party, had attempted to stop the deputy minister from entering the building, sparking off a commotion.
The photograph also contained a zoomed in version of the visible pistol grip.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Saravanan said he has a license for the Glock handgun and has no record of having pointed his weapon at anyone.
"I have been carrying a licensed firearm for the past 15 years for security reasons. There is nothing wrong with that. I renew my license every year.
"The weapon is usually kept in my car.
"But on that day, it was in the holster and I believe that during the commotion, my coat moved a little, exposing the gun's grip.
"I did not point it at anyone," he added.
Malaysiakini learnt that the police will have a word with the deputy minister regarding the manner in which he carried his firearm.
Though it is a licensed weapon, the police, however, said it must be carried with extreme caution in order to avoid dangerous situations, such as the firearm being snatched in the event of a scuffle or so forth. - M'kini
