KUALA LUMPUR - independent oversight panels whose terms expired yesterday will not be abolished, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said today.
Disputing media reports suggesting this, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed said that Putrajaya was currently selection new members to fill the Operations Review Panel and Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel.
“The MACC denies media reports that the government will abolish the two independent panels overseeing the MACC, which is the Operations Review Panel and Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel that were formed under the MACC Act 2009,” he said in a statement today.
He did not identify the media outlets that carried reports of the rumours, but news portal The Malaysian Insider yesterday published an article to the effect.
Access to the news portal was today blocked by the Malaysian Multimedia and Communications Commission under the Commission and Multimedia Act 2009 (CMA) over allegedly improper use of network services and facilities.
On a separate matter, Abu Kassim also denied that the advice from the OPR for his commission to continue its investigation on the RM2.6 billion deposited into the prime minister’s accounts in 2013 was meant to challenge the authority of the Attorney-General.
“I wish to emphasise as stated in Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution that prosecutorial powers are under the purview of the Attorney-General,” he added.
The MACC Operations Review Panel held its 29th and final meeting yesterday.
The term of the oversight panel, whose members are appointed by the prime minister, expired yesterday with no replacements announced.
The panel said in a statement following the meeting that it advised the MACC on the cases involving SRC International and the transfer of RM2.6 billion into Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s private accounts.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Apandi Ali last month ordered both cases to be closed after saying he detected no wrongdoing in either. - Malay Mail
