Abu Sayyaf militants allegedly received just P100 million (RM8.8 million) in exchange for the release of the four Sarawakian sailors they abducted, even though P130 million (RM12 million) was said to be paid as ransom, The Manila Times reported last night.
Citing unnamed sources, the Philippine newspaper said the missing RM3.2 million raised suspicions that the rebels may be in cahoots with government officials from Malaysia and the Philippines, who may have shared the money among themselves.
"It’s now a burning issue in Malaysia. The ransom payment is already one of their headlines but, surprisingly, it has yet to reach the Philippine media’s attention.
"We got information that the Abu Sayyaf group was incensed after learning from news reports that the money was actually RM12 million (P130 million), but only P100 million reached them,” one senior official was quoted as saying,
"The question is, where did the missing money go?”
Another source alleged that a local government official in Sulu was involved in the negotiations.
"It is common knowledge in Malaysia that usually P30 million (RM2.64 million) is paid as ransom for any number of Malaysian victims in the past. The P130 million by far is the highest,” the source was quoted as saying.
The source claimed that some local officials, including perhaps even the military, had colluded with Abu Sayyaf.
“Why are they so passive? Obviously, there is complicity here. Much of the answers could be provided by the governor of Sulu (Abdusakur Tan),” the source is quoted as saying.
Malaysian police have denied ransom was paid for the release of the four Sarawakians.
The police said the Philippine-based militant group was pressured into releasing its hostages due to the barter trade ban Malaysia imposed on southern Philippines.
This was after the families said they raised RM12 million and passed it to the police Special Branch, which Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in a bizarre claim, said was given to a charity in the Philippines.

Zahid said the money went to “legally and religiously sanctioned” organisations and agencies in the Philippines.
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar later said the minister had been referring to a third party agent that had come forward.
Four Sarawakian sailors, Wong Teck Kang, Wong Teck Chii, Johnny Lau and Wong Hung Sing, were kidnapped off Sabah on April 1.
It was reported that they were released in Jolo, Sulu, on June 8 after negotiations with the Abu Sayyaf militants led by sub-commander Apo Mike.- Mkini
