Development promises, rice bags leave mark on voters

Voters in the twin by-elections appear to have been wooed by promises of development by the ruling party, as well as aid and other handouts.
At one polling centre in SJK (C) Tsung Wah, Kuala Kangsar this morning, two wheelchair-bound elderly voters Lee Chai Yong and Kow Koon Lian brought in by their families members declared their support for BN.
They said they have voted BN candidate Mastura Mohd Yazid with the intention of bringing development to the constituency.
"I do this for the country," Lee told Malaysiakini when met.
"My three children, who work in Singapore and Taiwan, have not come back to vote, saying it’s too problematic," she added.
Meanwhile, Loh Chee Meng speaking for his mother Kow, said both of them support BN for the sake of development.
"The people in Kampung Payah Potong received a 5kg package rice twice," he said, admitting this is part of the reason why they voted for BN, saying the coalition is helping the community.
During the campaign period, Gerakan gave out packs of rice and hamper lucky draws to elderly constituents in Kuala Kangsar to woo voters.
Freed fishermen don BN tees
Similarly, the return of the fishermen detained by the Indonesian government appears to have paid dividends for the ruling party.
In Sekinchan, Sungai Besar, the two freed fishermen Chua Lee Teck and Heng Chee Yong were seen wearing BN T-shirts near a voting centre, accompanied by Gerakan members.
Gerakan vice president Dominic Lau said the fishermen are helping campaign for BN after they were released by the Indonesians last Thursday.
"I still remember their parents said they wanted their sons back and asked the government not to just give promises.
"Now the government has kept its promise and the father and family members too are keeping their promise to campaign for BN with us," Lau told the media.

After almost two weeks of campaigning, Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar voters go to vote today after the twin by-elections were triggered by the deaths of the incumbents in a helicopter tragedy in Sarawak.
In Sungai Besar, it is a three-way match among BN local boy Budiman Mohd Zohdi, Amanah prodigal son Azhar Shukur and PAS outsider Dr Rani Osman.
Meanwhile in Kuala Kangsar, the widow of the incumbent MP, Mastura Mohd Yazid is defending the seat for BN against Amanah nuclear physicist Ahmad Termizi Ramli, PAS doctor Najihatussalehah Ahmad, and independent academician Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary. - Mkini
