Buoyed by BN twin victories in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is now setting his eyes on recapturing Selangor from Pakatan Harapan.
A jubilant Najib said this to some 250 supporters gathered at the Umno Sungai Besar headquarters to celebrate the victory of BN's candidate Budiman Mohd Zohdi.
"With this victory in Sungai Besar, it can be our starting point for a renewed vibrant spirit.
"The spirit for us to attack! For us to recapture Selangor," he declared to cheers from the crowd.
However, he also appeared to caution against over confidence, reminding that BN is in fact the opposition in Selangor.
"Some people wrongly say we want to defeat the opposition. That means we want to beat our own party.
"We are not the ruling party (in Selangor). We are the opposition," he said.
The Umno president also rallied the crowd and urged them to remain united ahead of the 14th General Elections.
Selangor fell to the federal opposition in 2008 and BN have struggled to recapture the state since.
However, a fractured opposition has left it greatly weakened, and the by-elections were a testament of how BN could take advantage of the situation.
While Najib is out to reverse BN's fortunes in Selangor, Selangor PAS chief Iskandar sounded alarm bells, warning that the federal opposition cannot hold on to the state if it is split.
BN's strong victories were in part contributed by a feuding opposition between Pakatan Harapan and PAS.
Analysts have predicted that Najib may call for early polls in light of BN's strong showing in the by-elections.
Budiman garnered 16,800 votes against Parti Amanah Negara's Azhar Abdul Shukur (7,609) and PAS' Dr Abdul Rani Osman (6,902). - Mkini
