DR Mahathir Mohamad said Prime Minister Najib Razak should have little to complain about older politicians leading the opposition coalition.
“Well, since they’re old, why is he so worried?” said the former prime minister in Putrajaya today.
Najib told an investor conference earlier today that the latest leadership structure announced by Pakatan Harapan was “farcical sounding, a bit like a return-to-work programme for old-age political pensioners”.
“He should be happy,” said Dr Mahathir after chairing a political forum with academicians.
“He should think, ‘well, it’s very good that they have very old people leading Pakatan Harapan. They are sure to lose the election’.
“He should think, ‘well, it’s very good that they have very old people leading Pakatan Harapan. They are sure to lose the election’.
“He should be celebrating, not complaining or remarking about it.”
The PH leadership line-up was made known on July 14. Dr Mahathir, 92, was announced as the coalition’s chairman, while Anwar Ibrahim was announced as the de-facto leader.
Anwar will celebrate his 70th birthday on August 10.
His wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, was named the coalition’s president. She is 64.
Opposition veteran Lim Kit Siang, 76, who was not named in the new line-up, told reporters recently that he wanted to make way for younger leaders.
Najib celebrated his 64th birthday on Sunday, the same day he announced RM1.59 billion in cash incentives and assistance programmes for Felda settlers.
