Banning alcohol and freezing their sale licenses will not solve the problem of drink-driving, said Padang Serai MP M Karupaiya.
Instead, he said it could turn those who have become alcoholics to more dangerous alternatives.
"If we ban the sale of alcohol, alcoholics may look for other alternatives such as drugs or cheap (bootleg) liquor.
"This is more dangerous than what we are facing now. I am not supporting them (alcoholics) but this is the reality of it," Karupaya told Malaysiakini.
He was commenting on calls for alcohol sales to be suspended following a rash of fatal road accidents involving drunk drivers.
Proponents also want harsher penalties for drink-driving to be put in place.
DBKL has in turn, frozen the approval for new liquor sale licenses.
Karupaiya said he supported the need for harsher punishments for drink driving, saying there can be "no compromise"
However, instead of freezing liquor licenses, he said what was needed were better regulations
"For example, a time limit on the sale of alcohol. Stricter enforcement at areas with nightclubs and entertainment centres," said the PKR MP in giving examples.
Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said proposed law amendments for harsher penalties for drink-driving will also cover other forms of reckless driving, including driving under the influence of drugs, basikal lajak (modified bicycle racers) and the Mat Rempit motorcycle menace. - Mkini
