PETALING JAYA: The federal and state governments have a joint duty to face economic challenges arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, says Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
The International Trade and Industry Minister said infrastructure programmes have multiplier effects on the economy of the country and these projects must be continued.
"We put aside politics and this is the time the (federal and state) governments must come together to face economic challenges," said Azmin.
The Senior Minister also praised Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Amirudin Shari's leadership of the state.
He said this to the media after chairing the Selangor State Development Action Council meeting with Amirudin and various other state agencies here Monday (June 29).
"Selangor is a very important state to us (the federal government) contributing more than 23% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and we must ensure there is no disruption.
"I now represent the Federal Government but certainly, Selangor is dear to me, very close to my heart, and I am glad that we have a strong team under Amirudin," said Azmin, who was the former Selangor Mentri Besar for two terms prior to Amirudin.
On the Opposition's choice of Prime Minister, the former PKR deputy president said he was not privy to Pakatan Harapan Plus' decision to propose Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal as the ninth PM.
"My presence here in Selangor is to show my support to the state under the leadership of Amirudin.
"I am also a Selangorian," said Azmin, when asked if there was an agenda in his first meeting with former fellow party man Amirudin after breaking away from PKR.
Azmin and his then protege Amirudin were deemed to be in separate camps in PKR before the former left to join Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to form the Perikatan Nasional government, ousting Pakatan Harapan. - Star
