PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang voiced confidence today that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim will be prime minister under a new deal with Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In a statement, he also dismissed the notion that DAP and Amanah, PKR’s fellow components in Pakatan Harapan (PH), had abandoned Anwar by urging him to accept the deal nominating Mahathir as the coalition’s candidate for prime minister for a period of six months after which Anwar would take over.
“DAP and Amanah have never abandoned Anwar in favour of Mahathir as it is the surest way for Anwar to become prime minister,” he said.
His comments follow a joint statement by DAP and Amanah yesterday that an agreement on the transition of power from Mahathir to Anwar within six months would be signed in black and white.
PKR had earlier rejected Mahathir as PH’s nominee for the top post if the opposition retakes Putrajaya.
Lim said PH had made mistakes throughout its 22 months in power and must avoid repeating them if it succeeds in restoring the mandate given to the coalition in the 14th general election.
“With the question of the prime minister settled with regard to the transition of Mahathir as the ninth prime minister to Anwar as the 10th prime minister in six months’ time, a coalition system of decision-making with regard to major appointments and mode of Cabinet governance would have to be agreed upon.”
Still, he said, even if these were resolved, there was no guarantee that the people’s mandate could be restored.
He said PH would continue as a united political movement to bring institutional and democratic change to the country. - FMT
