Amid PM candidate dispute, Anwar's 'bamboo pruning' sets tongues wagging

Malaysiakini

Politicians are known for their cryptic statements and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's latest Twitter post of him gardening has fueled similar speculation.
The post comes amid a dispute if Dr Mahathir Mohamad or Anwar should be named as the prime minister candidate if Pakatan Harapan and its allies recapture the federal administrative capital.
“Gardening this evening as usual. We prune (cantas) and correct what needs to be corrected so that the atmosphere becomes more cleaner and orderly,” read the caption.
The post included several photographs of the PKR president, with a white cloth tied around his head, including one of him chopping a bamboo with a machete.
Malaysiakini understands that the photographs were taken at his residence in Bukit Segambut, Kuala Lumpur.
Twitter users, who responded to the post, wondered if there was a hidden meaning, given the current situation in Harapan.
The veteran politician has remained mum with regard to DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke urging PKR to state its stand on the proposal for Mahathir to be prime minister and Anwar as his number two.
Anwar's political aide Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak castigated DAP over the matter, asking if this is how it treated a friendship of more than two decades.
Whereas, PKR chief organising secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said it was unfair to force Anwar to accept Mahathir as prime minister again.
PKR is scheduled to hold an emergency central leadership council meeting tomorrow to discuss the matter.
The previous Mahathir-Anwar combination for the top two posts from 1993 to 1998 ended on a bitter note after the latter was sacked and jailed.
Anwar maintained that the charges against him were fabricated and launched the reformasi movement, which brought together parties with opposing ideologies such as DAP and PAS.
Prior to the last general election, Anwar agreed to set aside the past and joined hands with Mahathir to unseat the BN government with the understanding that he would succeed the nonagenarian as prime minister.
However, the succession plan turned into a contentious issue over the ensuing months and the Harapan government collapsed in February due to a political coup.
In his exclusive interview with Malaysiakini in which Loke urged PKR to make a decision, he also confirmed that Mahathir would be prime minister for six months before passing the baton to Anwar.
According to him, there are mechanisms in place to ensure the 95-year-old politician kept his word. - Mkini
