Confusion over MP’s letter

PETALING JAYA: Two different versions of Datuk Shahruddin Md Salleh’s (pic) resignation letter have put the Sri Gading MP in the spotlight.

One version of the letter on his Facebook page stated that Shahruddin confessed that he made a “mistake” in supporting Perikatan Nasional but another viral letter, allegedly signed by him, claimed he would remain as a backbencher.

As a result, it has given rise to the confusion over whether he is still with the Perikatan government.

A source from the Prime Minister’s Office said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin received the second version of the letter.

Another source in the Sri Gading constituency confirmed that the first letter was mainly “a message” to his voters.

In the version tagged to Facebook, Shahruddin allegedly wrote that he had formed a political “ijtihad” (independent reasoning), which was not right by joining the Perikatan government under Muhyiddin.

“I should have placed priority by considering Sri Gading voters, who chose Pakatan Harapan in the 14th General Election.

“As my first step in correcting this mistake, I therefore resign as I was appointed to the post by the Prime Minister of Perikatan,” he wrote.

The second letter, with Shahruddin’s signature and addressed to Muhyiddin, had circulated on social media.

It stated that he resigned as deputy works minister but was still a backbencher.

“I thank the Prime Minister for giving me the opportunity to be in his Cabinet. I remain at the seat of Perikatan Nasional backbenchers,” stated the letter dated yesterday.

Last week, Shahruddin had been speculated to leave Perikatan and defect to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s camp.

On Tuesday, the former secretary-general of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia said he wanted the party to remain strong and that his love for Bersatu was above any leaders, including party president Muhyiddin or its former chairman Dr Mahathir.

Muhyiddin and Dr Mahathir are currently involved in a political tussle.

Attempts to contact Shahruddin to verify both letters were not successful.

Separately, a video of Shahruddin meeting up with Dr Mahathir was put up by the former premier.

It showed Shahruddin, the former political secretary to Muhyiddin, getting a hero’s welcome from Dr Mahathir and his team hours after his resignation as deputy minister. - Star
