The Health Ministry's daily Covid-19 presser turned into a sombre affair today when its director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced it was the last day on the job for one of his deputies, who had been playing a key role in the battle against the pandemic.
Dr Rohaizat Yon (photo), the ministry's deputy director-general (medical), is going into compulsory retirement after 35 years in service.
"If there are no more questions, I want to inform that this is the last day for one of my generals, Rohaizat, who is retiring today.
"Having served for 35 years and 10 days, he had been with the Health Ministry team wading through all the challenges and fighting against the Covid-19 outbreak," he said at the tail end of the press conference.
Noor Hisham then expressed his appreciation to Rohaizat for his services.
It took a while for Noor Hisham to finish his sentence as he tried to hold back tears.
"The highest appreciation and millions of thanks to Rohaizat for giving high commitment throughout his service to the people," Noor Hisham added, to a round of applause from all present.
Rohaizat, who had been beside Noor Hisham in almost every press conference since the Covid-19 outbreak hit the country early this year, then put his hand on his left shoulder in a gesture of thanks.
He was then called to the stage to give a speech, where he conveyed his appreciation to the Health Ministry staff and the public.
He also thanked the media for their role in disseminating information on Covid-19 to the public, saying that the ministry's advice to practice social distancing and wear a face mask have achieved excellent results.
"I am very proud to have served the Health Ministry and the people.
"Daun selasih daun mengkudu, terima kasih (thank you), I love all of you," Rohaizat said. - Mkini
