Malacca Harapan files suit over legitimacy of state assembly speaker

Malaysiakini

Malacca Pakatan Harapan has filed an originating summons contesting the validity of Malacca Umno chairperson Abdul Rauf Yusoh’s appointment as the state assembly speaker.
The case will be heard in court on July 6.
“We know that the constitution and the law are an important process to determine the legitimacy of the state assembly.
“So Malacca Harapan, through Omar Jaafar and Wong Fort Pin as the speaker and deputy speaker respectively, have filed an originating summons at the Malacca courts on June 17.
“There are three defendants, that are Abdul Rauf, (Rim assemblyperson) Ghazale Muhamad and (senator) Mohd Ali Mohamad,” said Malacca Harapan chief Adly Zahari (above, centre) at a press conference in Malacca today.
Adly, who was the former Malacca menteri besar, said they hoped justice could be served and the legitimate speaker be determined.
On May 11, a one-day Malacca assembly sitting descended into chaos with Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Harapan assemblypersons engaging in a shouting match and hurling insults at each other after then-House speaker Omar rejected a motion for his removal.
This prompted Omar, who was appointed by the previous Harapan government, to adjourn the sitting.
However, PN assemblypersons returned to the House later during the absence of Omar and opposition assemblypersons to appoint their own speaker.
PN also approved the appointment of Mohd Ali as a senator to represent Malacca at the federal level after appointing their own speaker.
PN had sought to gain control of the House proceedings after taking over the Malacca government.
