Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will address the nation in a televised broadcast at 3pm tomorrow to announce a short-term economic recovery plan.
The speech will be aired on government-owned channels Bernama and RTM as well as on TV3 and Astro Awani.
The announcement comes four days before the conditional movement control order (MCO) is scheduled to end.
The conditional MCO - which saw the relaxation of restrictions on most economic sectors and some social activities - began on May 4.
Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (above, right) previously shared that the short-term economic recovery plan will span six areas:
- Healthcare operational requirements
- Building capabilities and providing jobs
- Encouraging consumer spending
- Micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) recovery support
- Build resilience and growth for companies
- Provide short-term growth and investor confidence
Based on his Facebook posts in the past month, he has held engagements with several ministries as well as with representatives from the e-commerce, technology, food and beverage, fast-moving consumer goods, telecommunications, private healthcare and creative arts industries.
He has also met with a number of business guilds and professional associations.
Muhyiddin had announced the economic stimulus package on March 27.
While lauded for initiatives like its wage subsidy programme, it was criticised for not doing enough to help SMEs weather the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
On April 6, the PM unveiled additional assistance for SMEs including more wage subsidies, zero-interest loans and tax relief for commercial property owners who reduced rent.
The latest economic recovery plan will be the sixth time the government has announced a stimulus package following the pandemic. - Mkini
