Report: MACC says 'no political motive' behind Bersatu Youth member's arrest

Malaysiakini

MACC arrested a Bersatu Youth member late last night and the wing's information chief Ulya Husamuddin is expecting the dragnet to widen.
Contacted by Malaysiakini, Ulya said the member was called into MACC’s Putrajaya headquarters to assist with an investigation before he was arrested.
“They said that it was to investigate Bersatu Youth’s accounts,” he said.
Meanwhile, MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya told The Malaysian Insight that the arrest was in connection to the RM250,000 that previously went missing from party wing chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's residence.
Contrary to what the party wing claims, he told the news website that there was "no political motive" behind the arrest.
“The suspect will have to explain whether Bersatu Youth funds were misused by certain parties. There is no political motive behind this arrest," Khusairi was quoted as saying.
He added that the member will be remanded for five days.
In an official statement, Ulyaa claimed that the arrest was meant to “silence” members who previously questioned the party’s top leadership.
“Bersatu Youth hopes the MACC will conduct a fair and transparent investigation on its leaders without any bias.
“Bersatu Youth believes that the arrest is a form of pressure aimed at silencing members who previously spoke up and held different views from the party’s top leaders,” he said.
Ulya earlier shared that the detained member had previously “exposed” Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin of enticing Umno MPs to join Bersatu by offering them GLC posts.
Muhyiddin is also the president of the fractured Bersatu, which is witnessing a power tussle between him and the party's disputed chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Bersatu Youth leaders are being arrested one by one. Apparently for an investigation but the charge is not even clear,” he wrote on Facebook.
“The party chairperson (Mahathir) and president (Muhyiddin) were always informed of all expenses and sources of funding. Our lawyers are ready.
“These are the people who exposed the audio recording on GLC distributions by Muhyiddin and asked MACC to investigate. Those who exposed this are being arrested and pressured,” he added.
Ulya and Syed Saddiq are aligned to Mahathir.
Mahathir, Syed Saddiq and three others had their Bersatu membership nullified for sitting on the opposition bench during the May 18 Parliament session. The five are challenging the decision. - Mkini
