Covid-19: JB schools closed due to area's red zone status

PETALING JAYA: All educational institutions in Johor Baru will be closed starting Nov 1, says the Education Ministry.

The ministry said a total of 376 schools located in the red zone area would be closed for two weeks until Nov 14.

It said the move was due to an increase in Covid-19 cases and because the district has been declared a red zone by the Health Ministry.

“This involves primary, secondary and private schools registered under the ministry, as well as Teacher Education Institutes, ” it said in a statement on Friday (Oct 30).

It added that educational institutions with hostels will also be closed.

“Parents or guardians should take their children living in hostels home. Those who wish to remain in the hostels during this period will be placed under the care of the hostel wardens, ” it said, adding that food and drinks will be provided by the respective institutions.

The ministry said students who are scheduled to sit for international examinations during this period need to get a letter from their schools to sit for the exams.

“Principals and headmasters must ensure that teaching and learning are conducted at home according to the suitability of the teachers and students.

“The ministry will continue to monitor the situation throughout the country and is working closely with the National Security Council and Health Ministry.

“Notice on the closure of schools for other districts will be made from time to time, ” it said.

The full list of institutions can be found on www.moe.gov.my and the ministry’s official social media channels.

In a separate statement, the ministry also said the Special School Admissions Assessment for those entering Form Four in 2020, originally scheduled to begin on Nov 2, has been postponed indefinitely. - Star
