Minister: Do Hannah Yeoh and Fahmi Fadzil represent foreigners?

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob has lashed back against several opposition lawmakers who questioned his statement that endorsed condominium managements asking their residents to submit a Covid-19 report.

PKR's Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said the policy must be reviewed as it could discriminate against residents who couldn't afford to pay the testing cost.

While DAP's Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh said the policy would be an inconvenience for tenants and implied that it was not based on a scientific method.

Taking to Twitter, Ismail said their statements were misleading and asked if both lawmakers were representatives for foreigners.

"For Hannah Yeoh and Fahmi Fadzil, they are fighters for foreigners.

"To them, the cost which the foreigners will bear is more important than the lives of Malaysians.

"Maybe they are the people's representatives for foreigners, not Malaysians," he said.

Yesterday, Ismail said the management of condominiums and residential complexes could make rules that will ensure the safety of their residents although there is no such policy made by the National Security Council.

It was reported that the management bodies of several condominiums have made it mandatory for their tenants to undergo a Covid-19 test.

Explaining further, Ismail said the management of condominiums had a right to ask foreign residents to undergo screening as condominiums or apartments were private areas.

"In fact, they can ban visitors, for instance, in Sarawak, outsiders are not allowed to visit longhouses," he said.

However, NGOs representing property and facility managers pointed out that existing laws do not allow such a rule to be carried out by the management bodies.

"We are of the opinion that there are presently no such legal provisions to facilitate the management to carry out such an action and strongly recommend our members and generally all related practitioners, joint management bodies and management corporations to refrain from doing so," their statement read.

The statement was jointly signed by Malaysian Institute of Property and Facility Managers (MIPFM) president Adzman Shah Mohd Ariffin, Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia's (RISM) Property Surveying Division and Association of Valuers, Property Managers, Estate Agents and Property Consultants in the Private Sector Malaysia (PEPS) president Michael Kong. - Mkini
