2 cops among 4 held in ‘protection money’ probe

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission suspects the drug syndicate had been paying for tip-offs on impending raids for the past few years.

GEORGE TOWN: Four men, including two police officers, have been remanded to assist in an investigation into “protection money” totalling RM500,000 given by a drug syndicate here.

It is believed the syndicate had been paying for tip-offs on upcoming raids for the past few years.

The magistrates’ court here allowed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to remand the four suspects, aged between 23 and 43.

It is learnt that one of the suspects is an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), while another is a lance corporal. The other two are a Penang Island City Council (MBPP) officer and a businessman.

The two policemen and the MBPP officer were remanded for two days from today while the businessman was remanded for four days.

K Kumaran and Muniandy Vestanathan represented the policemen and the MBPP officer, but the businessman was unrepresented when the remand application was made before assistant registrar Muhammad Azam Md Eusoff. - FMT
