KOTA BARU: Malaysians should take the cue from the prime minister who has been inoculated with the Covid-19 vaccine, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said.

He said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and several others who had received their vaccinations including the Health director-general (Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah) had shown that the procedure was safe.

"There is nothing to fear about taking the vaccine. It is like the jabs we have taken before going for umrah or haj.

"Some people might be afraid to take the vaccine after being influenced by certain quarters," he said, adding that he was excited to be among the first in Kelantan to receive the vaccine next week.

Ahmad urged everyone in the state to register themselves via the MySejahtera app to get their Covid-19 vaccines after receiving the first batch of more than 18,000 vaccine doses here today.

Malaysia yesterday kickstarted the country's largest inoculation programme against the infection, starting with the administration of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine.

Muhyiddin received the first dose, followed by Dr Noor Hisham and four frontliners, at the Putrajaya Health Office in Presint 11, Putrajaya.

Themed "Protect Yourself, Protect All", the programme was implemented in three phases, with Phase 1 from February to April involving some 500,000 frontliners.

Phase 2 from April to August involves 9.4 million people including senior citizens aged 65 and above, the high risk group and the disabled; while Phase 3 from May this year to February 2022 for the population aged 18 and above - Malaysians and non-citizens - with a target of over 13.7 million people.

The government aims to inoculate at least 80 per cent of the population with the Covid-19 vaccine by February next year. - NST
