Police have arrested a senior citizen for a nine-minute long video deriding Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor over a joke he made about containers being used as makeshift morgue for those who died from Covid-19.
The 61-year-old man was arrested at 3.57am today after Sanusi’s special officer lodged a police report against him yesterday.
Kuala Muda district police chief Adzli Abu Shah confirmed the arrest, according to Harian Metro.
The video was uploaded on a Facebook page called “Kamal Hero Malaya”.
Adzli said police tracked down the man to his home in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan and raided his home.
“In the raid, police seized a mobile phone belonging to the man. Investigation showed he had a prior record which is still being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code.”
Section 506 relates to criminal intimidation which provides for a punishment of up to two years imprisonment, or a fine or both.
“The man was remanded and released on police bail after his statement was recorded,” he said.
Adzli said the video incident is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Section 504 is related to intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace which carries a punishment of up to two years imprisonment or a fine or both.
Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 concerns insulting behaviour which carries a fine of up to RM100.
Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 concerns the misused of network facilities which is punishable with a fine of up to RM50,000 or up to a year imprisonment or both.
In the video, the senior citizen repeatedly questioned the Kedah menteri besar’s intelligence.
The senior citizen, who referred to himself as “Tok Abah”, also said Sanusi previously blew his top when a whistleblower outed him for going on a test drive during the Covid-19 lockdown and challenged the PAS leader to take action against him.
Nini Siron, who previously outed Sanusi for the test drive, had complained about being harassed by political operatives after she blew the whistle on him.
In the latest controversy, Sanusi asked journalists if anyone wanted to volunteer names for containers which were being used as a makeshift morgue to store mounting dead bodies from Covid-19.
He was responding to a question from journalists on whether there were enough containers to store the dead.
He had since apologised, claiming that the joke was taken out of context.
Sanusi is no stranger to controversies.
In March, he threatened to turn Penang’s water supply “muddy” if the state did not contribute to water treatment in Kedah.
In December last year, Sanusi came under fire for using racial stereotypes to hit back at Indian leaders for criticising his handling of the demolition of Hindu temples.
The PAS leader had accused his critics of being “drunk on the toddy of populism”. - Mkini
