'Enough lah' - Sim says after cops summon more MPs over Parliament march

PKR's Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin has told the police to cease summoning more opposition parliamentarians to record their statement for participating in a gathering outside Parliament last Monday.

This came after police summoned more than 30 MPs to have their statement taken at Dang Wangi district police station since Aug 4.

“I have lost count, but I think more than 30 MPs have been summoned. This is a historical high, never before did so many MPs were called up for an investigation over a gathering.

“That’s enough lah,” Sim told the media after giving his statement at Dang Wangi district police station this afternoon.

“During Najib Abdul Razak’s era, only five MPs were summoned (for participating) in an assembly.

“Now, we have over 30 parliamentarians summoned and more to turn up in the next few days. Is Muhyiddin Yassin trying to break this record?” asked Sim.

He noted that the prime minister was once subjected to police investigation for participating in rallies too.

“I remembered that he once carried a banner bearing the word ‘Respect MPs’ rights’. So, we are asking him to respect our rights as MPs.

“We were merely trying to bring our voices in Parliament, so when Parliament was suspended, we still needed to attend the sitting as we are duty-bound to do so,” he said.

Sim noted that the priority of the parliamentarians is their constituents instead of being mired into the police investigation.

On Aug 2, all opposition MPs from DAP, PKR, Amanah, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), Warisan, Parti Sarawak Bersatu and Upko came together to call for the resignation of Muhyiddin and his cabinet.

The lawmakers, who were unhappy that the last day of the Dewan Rakyat sitting was suspended, gathered at nearby Dataran Merdeka and planned a march to Parliament.

They were being investigated under Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, Section 269 of the Penal Code and Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Besides Sim, a total of 14 MPs have had their statements recorded.

On Aug 4, six opposition MPs were summoned to have their statement taken while the next day saw three more MPs having their statements recorded. Five MPs were called on Aug 6.

As of today, a total of 37 individuals had their statements recorded, according to Dang Wangi OCPD Mohamad Zainal. - Mkini
