Police have questioned a local Umno leader over third-party comments about Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (above) on her Facebook posts.
The party’s Sungai Petani division chief Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff said she was summoned to the Alor Setar district police headquarters yesterday.
She said she was questioned not for her comments but those made by others on several of her social media posts.
“I did not make bad comments, I did not make insulting comments, I did not insult the Kedah MB.
“I only posted (Facebook) statuses about the number of deaths in Kuala Muda. It was the public who made all sorts of comments.
“But this afternoon I was summoned to the IPD and had my statement taken by the police. The youth who commented on my Facebook status only said the word ‘bingai’ (fool) but had to sleep a night in the lockup. Oh God,” she said on Facebook.
Shahanim shared photographs of her at the police station along with screenshots of four of her recent Facebook posts that were about the number of Covid-19 deaths recorded in Kuala Muda, Kedah.
“Is it wrong to post about the number of deaths?
“I was speaking up for the rakyat. God knows my intention. I will continue to speak up.
“Where is democracy? I submit myself to God,” she also said.
This comes as four people were arrested this week for allegedly making critical comments about Sanusi. The MB’s special officer had lodged a police report over their remarks.
No stranger to controversy, Sanusi recently “joked” about the state having enough containers for Covid-19 dead bodies and asked for sign ups.
“Containers for the dead are enough, who wants to go in can give their names,” he remarked during a press conference.
He later apologised for his comment, saying it had been “taken out of context”.
Along with health experts and members of the public, Shahanim had also been critical of Sanusi’s off-colour remark.
She had lambasted him for being insensitive to families who lost loved ones to the virus.
“Don’t make jokes when it comes to the issue of deaths. Please think of the feelings of those who have been affected by Covid-19,” she had said.
Following the arrests, opposition party PKR Youth urged Sanusi and the police to stop using laws to oppress the people’s freedom of speech.
It said the MB should instead take full responsibility for his own remarks. - Mkini
