DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today any new appointments by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin ahead of a confidence vote in Parliament in September could raise public suspicions of attempts to buy political support.
He said this in dismissing Muhyiddin's appointment of Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who is also Tambun MP, as a special adviser with minister status.
"How does Ahmad Faizal's appointment to advise the prime minister on community relations and communications, as well as socio-economic development, help the battle against Covid-19 or overcome the economic recession?
"He has a failed record on community relations, communications and socio-economic development until he was booted out after he lost a confidence vote in the Perak State Assembly, with only 10 out of 59 assemblypersons supporting him," Lim said in a statement.
Amid record-breaking numbers of new Covid-19 cases and deaths, Lim said Muhyiddin had announced Faizal's appointment, rather than present new measures to contain the public health crisis.
Describing the move as regrettable, the former finance minister said Faizal's appointment was also a waste of public funds that could be better spent on the people.
"Ahmad Faizal's appointment has clearly shown that Muhyiddin has lost the plot and has no conception or plan to guide Malaysia out of the current crisis.
"Malaysians want to see either a roadmap on reopening the economy quickly or mitigating measures on Covid-19," he said.
Lim said there should also be public accounting for the 10,019 deaths as of yesterday, 1,203,706 cases and more than RM500 billion in economic losses since MCO 1.0 last year.
"There is no reason why Malaysia should fail together with Muhyiddin," he stressed.
Ahmad Faizal's appointment was made as an embattled Muhyiddin pushed back against attempts to question the legitimacy of his Perikatan Nasional government.
This came after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and a group of MPs from the party withdrew their support for Muhyiddin. - Mkini
