ROS declares Umno elections postponement invalid

The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has declared Umno's decision to postpone its party elections as invalid.

ROS director-general Jasri Kasim said the declaration was made based on minutes of an Umno supreme council meeting that decided on the postponement.

"Based on minutes of a July 7 Umno supreme council meeting to postpone internal elections for the Umno supreme council, divisions and branches for 18 months, the ROS is of the view that the decision is invalid.

"The decision (by Umno) is invalid because the term of the supreme council office bearers for 2018/2021 had ended on June 30," he added in a statement today.

The ROS had, in a response on July 19, told Umno it had no reservations to the postponement.

"However, we request urgent submission of details on decisions made by the party's Supreme Council, for purposes review and further validation," said the ROS in a letter to Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, sighted by Malaysiakini.

The ROS' statement today follows hot on the heels of a split among Umno MPs, with Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also an Umno vice-president, leading a larger group in favour of supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Perikatan Nasional.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, meanwhile, led 10 other MPs and Umno leaders who withdrew support for Muhyiddin as decided by delegates at the party’s last annual general assembly.

Umno elections are held every three years, with the last on June 30, 2018.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, in announcing the postponement of the party elections on June 30 this year, said it would not be for longer than 18 months.

He also said holding the election would involve 66,287 meetings, with the attendance of 3.3 million Umno members. - Mkini
