The Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF)'s has gone against a proposal by Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in its decision to no longer involve general practitioners (GPs) in the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NIP).
Taking to Twitter, Noor Hisham responded to Klang MP Charles Santiago who questioned the recent closure of vaccine administration centres (PPVs) and stopping vaccine appointments at 741 private GP clinics.
"Contrary to my proposal to increase the participation of GPs in the country under PHCorp.
"I have visited the GP practice myself and am happy with the progress made," said Noor Hisham.
Charles has tweeted: "What’s the motive: @DGHisham? Stopping vaccination appointments at 741 GPs & closing critically needed PPVs arbitrarily in the Klang Valley.
"Are we facing a vaccines shortage? Or just the usual planning failure. @IsmailSabri60."
Charles also thanked Noor Hisham for the response, although noting it was a strange situation given PHCorp's status as a Health Ministry-owned entity that liaises the private sector’s involvement in the NIP.
"Is there a way to get more GPs to vaccinate and withdraw PPV stop operation in the Klang Valley on the 23rd? Vaccination has to increase," he added.
On Aug 19, the CITF instructed the Selangor government and other stakeholders to close a slew of PPVs this month and next.
It explained the move was to “optimise resources in line with how the vaccination rate in Selangor has reached more than 90 percent and is expected to be completed in the near future”.
The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry has yet to respond to requests for comments on the PPV closures or exclusion of GPs from the NIP. - Mkini
