PAS disappointed Zahid went against Muafakat spirit with PN exit call

PAS is disappointed with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for ordering Umno MPs to withdraw from the Perikatan Nasional government.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (above) said this went against the spirit of Umno's pact with the Islamist party - Muafakat Nasional.

"PAS is disappointed with Zahid's actions... It is not in line with the spirit of uniting the ummah as codified in the Muafakat charter," he said in a statement.

Tuan Ibrahim said the Umno president's actions also threatened to derail the National Recovery Plan to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

Zahid is rallying Umno MPs to abandon the PN government and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin but is meeting internal resistance from those aligned to party vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Earlier at a press conference in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Tuan Ibrahim espoused the PN government as a good one, albeit with some flaws.

"Everyone has weaknesses. What is important is how to manage it," he said.

As for Muafakat, he said it was still intact - and hoped that Umno would help keep the PN government in one piece as well.

Zahid's actions had prompted Muhyiddin to call for a vote of confidence in September.

The prime minister claims to still have majority control, although this is doubted by his critics.
