Upset by Syed Husin's assessment, Ali Biju rates Muhyiddin among best-ever PM

Saratok MP Ali Biju has blasted former PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali for his comment that former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is "just about the worst PM we’ve ever had".

Saying that Muhyiddin had set a high benchmark, Ali said it was hardly surprising that Syed Husin should launch this sort of salvo at Muhyiddin.

"He is a longtime PKR leader and a hardcore supporter of Anwar Ibrahim. His view is hopelessly tainted by an aggressive partisanship," said Ali, who himself was elected under the PKR banner at the 2018 general election.

"Muhyiddin is not the worst PM, but ranks among the best we have ever had," he said.

"No other PM before him has sacrificed his job by refusing to compromise upon an important principle.

"He preferred to sacrifice his position as PM, rather than give in to kleptocrats or interfere with court matters," said Ali.

"Far from being a failed prime minister, Muhyiddin has set the gold standard on prime ministerial conduct.

"It is in the narrow political interest of the opposition and its supporters to pile abuse upon Muhyiddin, but history will judge him quite differently," he added.

Like Ali, Muhyiddin was elected as part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition and chose to defect as part of the Sheraton Move which unfolded last February.

Since then, Muhyiddin has had to battle rising Covid-19 pandemic numbers and a shattered economy in a tailspin, and all while hanging on to power with a fragile majority that fell apart when his own coalition Umno members choose to withdraw their support.

Ali said that for Syed Husin to blame Muhyiddin for not "having enough of a majority" was pretty rich, considering that Harapan joined hands with the kleptocrats to repeatedly threaten Muhyiddin’s majority in the middle of a national health crisis.

Ironically, it was with this same group that the Sheraton Move teamed up with to topple the Harapan administration.

Ali, who is also a two-term Krian state assemblyperson, said that in British parliamentary practice, the opposition never brings down a minority government, even if the latter does not have the necessary numbers to form the government.

"There is little doubt that this irresponsible attempt at a power-grab will go down as one of the most disgraceful episodes in the political history of our nation, in which a starring role was played by Syed Husin’s PKR," he claimed.

He reminded the public that when Muhyiddin's majority was under threat, he offered seven major reforms which would have a far-reaching effect on the political landscape of the nation.

"These reforms were proposed by envoys from the opposition in a series of meetings but when made public by Muhyiddin, were flatly rejected by the opposition leaders.

"The opposition's dishonest about-turn only accentuates Muhyiddin's gentlemanly conduct in keeping his end of the bargain," said the man from Sarawak who served as deputy minister in Muhyiddin's administration.

He also took a swipe at some news portals that generate comments from politicians or so-called academics or analysts, to thinly disguise what amounts to sheer partisan abuse upon public figures whom they dislike or are against. - Mkini
