What kind of foreign aid did politicians get, says ex-general

Patriot president Mohd Arshad Raji said the revelation has serious national security implications.

PETALING JAYA: A military veterans’ group has called for an investigation into allegations that several national political leaders had received support from organisations abroad, including the United States, to strengthen their political careers.

Mohd Arshad Raji, president of the National Patriots Association, said that the Special Branch should launch an investigation immediately into a claim that “physical assets and hard cash“ were among the forms of support given by the foreigners to Malaysian politicians.

The allegation came from the former head of the Defence Intelligence Staff Division, Mohd Salleh Ismail, who said military intelligence had found that certain foreign individuals had expressed keen interest in providing support for specific local politicians.

“We knew that the action (of the parties abroad) was to provide assistance to certain people (in Malaysia). We did not have any evidence that this aid was delivered directly, but the information received involved several organisations in the US, for example,” he was quoted as saying by Mingguan Malaysia.

In response, Arshad, a retired brigadier-general, said the revelation could further worsen the people’s lack of trust in politicians, besides the serious implications on national security and sovereignty.

He said the government should find out if there was any breach of national security, get details of the cash and assets received, others implicated, and how long this had gone unreported.

“Was the liaison sanctioned by the party leadership? Who does the politician report to after a liaison has been concluded with a specific foreigner?” he said. - FMT
