Why two different letters from RoS on party polls, asks Umno man

The two different letters received by Umno, one dated July 19 agreeing to the postponement and another dated Aug 6 rejecting the postponement.

PETALING JAYA: Is the Registrar of Societies (RoS) agreeable to the postponement of the Umno elections or is it not?

An Umno supreme council member has now posed this question after two different letters were received from the RoS by the party.

Razlan Rafii said the first letter dated July 19 was received by the party on July 23. It stated that RoS “had no objections” to having the party polls postponed for 18 months.

The letter also stated that the postponement was in line with paragraph 10.16 of Umno’s constitution.

However, another letter was sent to Umno today saying that the postponement for 18 months was invalid.

“Why are there two letters? What is the reason?’ he asked.

Earlier today, a number of Umno MPs had held a press conference saying they were supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his government, in defiance of the party supreme council’s instructions.

Razlan said a record high of almost 21,000 Covid cases were reported today, adding that it was not safe to hold party polls.

“Is there any political interference that suddenly led to the postponement being said as invalid?” he asked.

Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz, meanwhile, said it was up to party leaders to appeal to RoS as the decision was made by an authoritative body.

However, it did not mean Umno party elections had to be held immediately, due to the surge in Covid-19 cases.

“Once the Covid-19 pandemic is resolved, it can be held but they should not wait till 18 months,” he told FMT.

Nazri, who was among those who had thrown their support behind Muhyiddin, claimed party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi may want to delay party elections until the general elections are over.

“If Zahid delays the party polls, he would still be the president and decide on the candidacy for seats,” Nazri said.

Due to that, he said the party election should be held as soon as the Covid-19 situation improves. - FMT
