PUTRAJAYA: The last group of Malaysians who managed to leave war-torn Ukraine is scheduled to return home tomorrow on a commercial flight from Warsaw, Poland.

The foreign ministry (Wisma Putra) said seven citizens and two foreign dependents of two Malaysians, led by interim chargé d’affaires Fadhilah Daud, travelled from Kyiv by road on Friday and arrived in Poland at 10.45pm on Saturday (5.45am Sunday in Malaysia).

Four cars were used, including two embassy vehicles, Wisma Putra said.

Responding to allegations that the evacuation had been botched, Wisma Putra said sensitive information, such as the evacuation plan, had not been disclosed to the public in order to ensure the safety of all involved.

Wisma Putra said the embassy in Kyiv, like other Malaysian missions, had a ready evacuation plan which was constantly updated based on the situation in the field and current needs. “The decision to implement the evacuation mission was made based on the latest report from the embassy,” it said.

Operations of the Malaysian embassy in Kyiv were temporarily suspended as two embassy officials were directly involved in the evacuation mission.

So far, only a few foreign embassies had suspended their operations in Kyiv or relocated their operations to other cities in Ukraine, Wisma Putra said. - FMT
