PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional intentionally triggered the elections in Johor with the purpose of reclaiming power over the state on its own, PAS election director Sanusi Md Nor claimed.
He said BN would later push for the 15th general election to be held, in order to consolidate power for the coalition, Utusan Malaysia reported.
BN lost to Pakatan Harapan in Johor and the federal government at the 2018 general election. However, members of its component parties have been part of coalition governments in Putrajaya and Johor since August last year.
PAS had been part of the Perikatan Nasional governments in Putrajaya and Johor from March 2020 until August last year when Umno withdrew support for the ruling coalition, causing it to lose its parliamentary majority.
Sanusi’s comments came in response to former prime minister Najib Razak expressing confidence that BN had a good chance of winning the next general election if it wins in the Johor elections on March 12, which he described as a bellwether in terms of competing on its own.
Sanusi admitted that it would be difficult to predict which party would come out tops in the Johor elections, especially since voters were more mature in their assessment of the various parties.
He also said that PAS and Perikatan Nasional candidates were from various backgrounds, with youth being put front and centre. -FMT
