More flood evacuees in Kelantan, Terengganu after non-stop rain

KUALA LUMPUR: Continuous heavy rain in Kelantan and Terengganu forced more people to be evacuated to temporary flood relief centres last night.

In Kelantan, a 13-year-old boy became the second flood fatality in the state after he was found drowned at Kampung Talang near Kadok at 7.15pm.

Kelantan deputy police chief Muhamad Zaki Harun said Mohamad Fazli Tamri, a student of SMK Kubang Kiat, was believed to have been riding his bicycle with friends before skidding and falling into a canal at 6.20pm.

A man, aged 70, had earlier been found drowned at Kampung Kuala Gris near Dabong in Kuala Krai.

As of 9pm, the number of flood evacuees in Kelantan increased to 7,558, involving 2,449 families, up to 6,018 from 2,019 families earlier in the evening.

Sixty-six relief centres have been opened in seven districts – 16 each in Kuala Krai and Pasir Mas, 15 in Tanah Merah, eight in Jeli, six in Pasir Puteh, four in Machang and one in Kota Bharu.

In Terengganu, the number of flood evacuees rose to 6,963 from 2,072 families as of 8pm, compared with 5,722 from 1,736 families in the evening.

A total of 117 relief centres have been set up in eight districts, comprising 32 in Besut, 27 in Setiu,17 each in Kemaman, Hulu Terengganu anf Dungun, five in Kuala Nerus and one each in Kuala Terengganu and Marang.

One hundred and sixty Form Five students staying in dormitories in two secondary schools were evacuated to a nearby relief centre.

The 2021 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations are scheduled to begin on March 2 and end on March 29. - FMT
