Floods in Kelantan continue to worsen

KOTA BARU: The floods in Kelantan continue to worsen with the number of victims now at 7,514 as of 8.30pm.

The victims, from 2,432 families, are now at 65 relief centres in seven districts.

The affected districts are Jeli, Pasir Mas, Kuala Krai, Kota Baru, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Tanah Merah.

According to the state welfare' department's flood portal, the victims were from several villages including Kampung Lawang, Kampung Kelewek, Kampung Kuala Balah and Kampung Rahmat.

The floods also saw water levels at two rivers breaching the danger mark at 8.30pm; Sungai Kelantan at the Guillemard Bridge recorded a water level of 16.26m, while Sungai Golok in Kampung Jenob rose to 26.5m and 10.59m in Rantau Panjang.

Other rivers were recorded above their warning marks.

Meanwhile,Kelantan deputy police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun in a statement tonight said police had deployed more than 400 personnel to flood-prone areas to assist the victims.

"We have deployed 12 lorries, four four-wheel-drive vehicles and two boats. We have also sent 50 life jackets to each district affected by floods.

"We are also getting assistance from the General Operations Force members and volunteers." - NST
