KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman’s narcotics criminal investigation department (CID) has seized 745.9kg of drugs worth over RM10 million in countrywide raids.

This was part of “Op Tapis Khas” from Feb 23 to 25, which followed a similar operation in January.

The department’s director, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, said 4,579 people, aged 14 to 60, were arrested for various drug offences during the operation.

The suspects are being investigated under different sections of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act and Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985, he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters today.

He said the operation was jointly conducted by Bukit Aman’s narcotics CID and their counterparts throughout the country. A total of 1,733 officers took part.

He urged the public to channel information related to drug trafficking activities to the narcotics CID hotline at 012-2087222.

Meanwhile, asked about the case involving tycoon Vincent Tan’s son, Ayob Khan said it was not within the scope of his department to comment.

Tan’s son was arrested in December 2019 under Section 39(b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death penalty for having a large quantity of drugs in his possession.

However, Twitter account Edisi Siasat, which recently changed its name to Edisi Khas, claimed that the case was classified as NFA (no further action) by former attorney-general Tommy Thomas.

In response, Thomas slammed the allegations and said that, as was usual in criminal matters, lawyers for the accused had submitted written representations to the Attorney-General’s Chambers to reconsider the decision to charge.

“Having studied the representations and the investigation papers, reviewing the relevant provisions and discussions with the case officers, I recall reducing the charges,” he said. - FMT
