Chinese community greets Najib with smiles in Perling

JOHOR POLLS | While on the campaign trail in the Johor state elections, ex-premier Najib Abdul Razak dropped by at a food court and was greeted by many smiling faces.

The ex-premier was campaigning on behalf of BN/MCA candidate Tan Hiang Kee who will be taking on Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong in Perling.

He posed for photographs and fist-bumped a number of patrons in the area, while some even greeted him with cheers of 'Bossku'.

Pakatan Harapan/DAP's Cheo Yee How won Perling in 2018 by a huge margin of 19,533 votes over MCA's Wong You Fong.

The constituency is a mixed one with 44 percent Malay, 44 Chinese, 11 percent Indian and one percent others.

BN received very little support from the Chinese community in that election but is counting on a swing.

Najib, who has been convicted on corruption charges but is free due to a stay of execution on his 12-year jail term, is still seen as a main drawing card for his party.

The former prime minister also took time from his campaign to take another jibe at Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, whom he said wants to be a poster boy for PN in the Johor polls yet doesn't love the state enough to be a candidate himself.

Voters will go to the polls on March 12, with early voting taking place on March 8. - Mkini
