JOHOR BAHRU: Former Bukit Pasir assemblyman Najib Lep has been sacked from PAS for standing as an independent against a party member in his former seat in the Johor state elections.
According to party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Najib’s decision to contest as an independent against PAS candidate Nur Iqbal Abd Razak, who is contesting under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner, went against the party’s decision.
He said Najib was offered another winnable seat to contest, but he had rejected it.
“I am firm (in my belief) that all members must adhere to the decisions made by the party. With his action, he automatically loses his party membership.
“All members are now required to throw their support behind the PAS candidate who represents PN,” Tuan Ibrahim told FMT today.
“As a deputy chief (of Bukit Pasir PAS) division, Najib should have adhered to the party’s decision.”
In a surprise move yesterday, Najib had submitted his nomination papers as an independent candidate for the Bukit Pasir seat.
The constituency will see a six-cornered fight involving candidates from PAS, Barisan Nasional, Pejuang, Pakatan Harapan and an independent candidate.
Najib was the sole party representative in the Johor state assembly prior to its dissolution on Jan 22.
He said he was prepared to face any action taken against him by the party’s leadership over his decision to contest the seat. - FMT
