Puad hits out at Bersatu youth chief over conspiracy claim

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior Umno leader has challenged Bersatu and its youth chief, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, to take a stance on the report from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) probe into Justice Datuk Mohd Nazlan Ghazali.

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, 65, said Wan Fayhsal, 35, should abstain from claiming that MACC leaked details of the report.

Instead, he said Wan Fayhsal should disclose his stance on Nazlan's alleged conflict of interest and breach of the Judges' Code of Ethics 2009 during the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the High Court.

Yesterday, Wan Fayhsal claimed that there was a conspiracy to free Najib through a royal pardon.

He claimed that the majority of people do not want to see the former prime minister released early from prison and disagreed with any effort to expedite his release.

Wan Fayhsal's comments followed Bersatu's Youth wing's police report against MACC for allegedly leaking details of its investigation into Nazlan.

The report, which was lodged by Bersatu Youth assistant secretary Faiz Rahmad, alleged that the MACC had leaked information to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

It also claimed that the information was then passed on to the media to make it appear as though Nazlan had passed an unfair judgment against Najib in the SRC International case.

Puad dismissed Wan Fayhsal's claim on the conspiracy to secure a pardon for Najib, pointing out that it is Najib's right to seek a pardon, which is enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

"Wan Fayhsal has a tendency to make false assumptions. Where is the evidence that a majority of people object to Najib trying to get a royal pardon?" he said in a statement earlier today.

Puad revealed that Najib applied for a pardon because he believed that he did not receive a fair trial due to Nazlan's alleged conflict of interest.

Last week, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the party had applied to His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to consider granting the former prime minister a royal pardon.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power, and money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to SRC International. - NST
