Fahmi, govt object to Bersatu influencer's bid to unblock TikTok accounts

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and the government have objected to a Bersatu influencer's judicial review leave application to unblock his two TikTok accounts, the duo's representatives from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) informed the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

Na’im Brundage’s counsel Zaid Malek confirmed that the objections centred over the contention that the court action was "incompetent” and “targeted the wrong parties”.

Among the five respondents targeted by the action are the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Fahmi and the federal government.

"Judge Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid has set Oct 28 to hear the respondents' objections," Zaid said when contacted.

Through the action filed on June 24, Na'im claimed that he found his two TikTok accounts blocked three months earlier.

The political commentator claimed that after emailing MCMC and Fahmi on March 28, he got a reply showing admission that the regulator had indeed restricted or blocked the accounts.

The Bersatu youth division leader claimed that the move violated his fundamental right to free speech and expression and sought a court order to have his accounts unblocked.
