PETALING JAYA: Repeat litterbugs will soon be punished with community service, specifically cleaning up drains, roads, and public toilets.
Housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming said this will be part of proposed amendments to the Local Government Act 1976, incorporating community service to discourage offenders from repeating the offence, Berita Harian reported.
“These offenders have been punished by the law and issued compounds. However, they have not been deterred by the penalties.
he was quoted as saying.So, we will ensure these repeat offenders participate in cleaning drains and roads while wearing special t-shirts,
Nga said such measures have proven to be effective in countries like Norway, Sweden, and even across the causeway, in Singapore.
He said the amendments will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat once the Cabinet approves it next year. - FMT
