Muhyiddin to Anwar: Heed sacred voice - it's telling you to 'turun'

Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin has reminded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim - once a seasoned street protester - that he himself once proclaimed the voice of the people as sacred.

The former premier urged his successor to heed that voice, following yesterday’s “Turun Anwar” rally in Kuala Lumpur calling for his resignation.

“You once said the voice of the people is sacred. Now, that sacred voice is ringing in your ears. Listen carefully to the people’s voice. The people want you to ‘turun’ (step down),” he said in a Facebook post.

Hailing the rally as a success, Muhyiddin (above) said it delivered a loud and clear message to Anwar and the Madani government.

“Do not lie to the people. Do not oppress the people. Do not take the people's voice lightly,” he said in reference to the rally’s message.

Muhyiddin also thanked all those who attended and congratulated them for exercising their right to assemble peacefully and in an orderly manner.

“Kudos to PN Youth, the NGOs, and all parties involved in organising this rally, who managed to gather a sea of people and conduct the event smoothly despite many challenges.

“Thank you to the security personnel, Briged Armada, Jabatan Amal Malaysia, and all involved in ensuring the safety of rally participants.

“Alhamdulillah, the situation remained under control and no untoward incidents occurred,” he added.

‘Anwar gets taste of own medicine’

Urimai chairperson P Ramasamy also described the rally as a “tremendous success”, claiming that it was a “virtual ocean of crowd”.

Although Malaysiakini estimated the crowd size to be in the region of 25,000 while the organisers insisted that it was half a million, Ramasamy placed the figures at between 150,000 and 200,000.

“Some leaders of the opposition could have exaggerated the extent of the size of the crowd that swelled in the afternoon. But the numbers were there to prove beyond doubt that it was a decisive rally that wanted Anwar to relinquish his position.

“It was essentially a proverbial case of Anwar getting the taste of his own medicine in calling for the reformasi movement when he was in the opposition,” he added in a statement.

Ramasamy said although those who gathered were mainly Malays coming from different states, there was a significant presence of Chinese and Indian participants.

“Gerakan brought the Chinese crowd, while Urimai and the MIPP (Malaysian Indian People’s Party) brought the Indian crowd. Urimai’s supporters from Penang, Selangor, Federal Territory and Negeri Sembilan marched together from the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Hindu temple, Masjid India, to join the crowd at Sogo.

“Urimai deliberately made the starting point at the Hindu temple,” he said in reference to the temple situated in Masjid India which became the focal point of a controversial relocation in March. - Mkini
