Cops arrest 2 men over ‘flogging’ of PM effigy at rally

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said police seized devices that were used to upload the suspects’ video, which had gone viral.

PETALING JAYA:

 Police have arrested two men, aged 21 and 47, for allegedly “flogging” an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the suspects are being investigated for sedition.

They are also being probed for improper use of network facilities, and for using indecent, threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that could lead to a breach of the peace

Khalid said police seized devices that were used to upload their video, which had gone viral.

“We will apply for the two men to be remanded,” he added in a statement.

Earlier today, acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said police had launched an investigation into the incident, which allegedly took place near Masjid Negara.

Police said that some 18,000 protesters took part in Saturday’s rally calling for Anwar to step down over the rising cost of living, among others.

The rally-goers had gathered at various locations in the capital before marching to Dataran Merdeka. - FMT
